Often people hear the phrase “self care” and just think it’s all about doing yoga, drinking tea, or going for a run, but they miss the fundamental basis. The benefits of self care, if performed properly, could leave you with greater peace of mind.
Picture this: you have a cup filled to the brim with water. After a long day of work, you have poured a little bit out of the cup. You later go home to your family and need to put dinner on the table, help with your son’s math homework, and console in your daughter’s middle school drama. Again, some water in your cup must be dumped out. In that second of time, it may seem like you still have plenty to give of yourself to the world. However, over the next few weeks of cycling through your schedule, your cup reaches empty. You are exhausted. You are overwhelmed. You just want to recharge.
Here is the problem… how do you fill your cup up again? With the monotony of life, it can sometimes be easy to fall into routines, but this is where the change needs to be made. Self care isn’t about going to the gym in the morning just to get your workout in. It is about acknowledging the good that you are doing for your body and soul. It’s that warm feeling when you intentionally set aside time for yourself to enjoy the moment. Self care is finding what you need at that moment to pick yourself up and continue to conquer your day to day trials and tribulations.
Here’s yet another misconception. Many think that self care is limited to the few methods mentioned in media, such as journaling, exercising, or breathing exercises, but there is so much more to it. After a long day, you may just want to return home and switch on the television to unwind, and that is perfectly fine. Self care is about listening to what your body needs and following through.
Little by little, you can refill your glass by taking a moment here and there for yourself. Here’s to gifting yourself with a spectrum of care dedicated to your difficult, yet magnificent, endeavors in life.
